Non-lame “seasonal” decorating?
Ok, for example, Christmas is over but I have a lot of icy looking lights and greenery up in the living room. That stuff feels wintery to me, not just Christmasy. I’m tempted to leave it up for awhile. I don’t want to look like the domestic version of those freaky year-round Christmas stores you see in tourist towns and 3rd tier malls, though. I mean the tree is already by the curb. Christmas out of season = bleh.
I’m thinking control over the color-scheme is the key. I’ve pulled out anything red as that’s a Christmas hallmark; no Santas and candy canes or stuff like. But what about white? Or icy blue? Or anything that feels kind of snowy-alpiney-nordicky? Ski season has just started after all and lots of hotels and lodges use twinkle lights and pine without looking like a North Pole annex. What would Martha Stewart do?

hi! love your site!
happy holidays!
can’t go wrong with snowflakes + icycles.
snowman are still cool.
i like to see christmas decorations until jan 6th
Leave it up. I already took all mine down and I’m wishing I hadn’t; my living room looks so bare and boring now!
2 checks in the leave it up column! right on!
What is with the rush to dispose of Xmas trees? I’m Mexican and my boyfriend is Irish. Where we come from, Xmas doesn’t end until January 6. What is the hurry?
you know mama i think it might be the garbage collectors’ fault. We only have 2 days on which they will carry away xmas trees so we hurry to make sure we meet the deadline. I blame them for our hurried de-decking!
My family always took our tree down on New Year’s Day and my fiance’s family takes theirs down on Twelfth Night (Dec. 6).
I’ve been told that any christmas decorations left up after february first will result in your getting a gremlin, whatever that is, supposed to be a german tradition.
