Always Room for Something Cool – Retro Scale
If you’re going to make homemade canned goods like we did last weekend, you have to weigh stuff. Ten pounds of tomatoes here, seven pounds of nectarines there…you get the idea. You need a scale. I wish, wish, WISH we had this one instead of the ugly (yet servicable) plastic one from Target.
Our scale lives on the counter because, well, being scale size is not the same as being scale-sized, so it doesn’t fit in the cupboards of our smallish kitchen. Now, if something has to sit out for all the world and me to see on a regular basis, it is absolutely justifiable to (a) spend a little money on something you want to look at; (b) hunt around until you find something you dig; and (c) justify it with my new favorite addage: “There’s always room for something cool.” (TM My Sister.)
Now this little scale (a perfect mix of 30s modern and cottage aesthetic if you ask me) has a lot to recommend it. It’s powder-coated steel so it’s heavy enough to hold down the weight. It comes in four charming colors. And, here’s the kicker – it’s 40 bucks. That’s it. Two of those huge-head new 20s. And, if you like the matchy-matchy, Typhoon has a bunch of other stuff that does that. If you like something a little bit more modern, check out their “Funky Scales.” I’m frankly torn as to which I like best.
